After a slow hour-plus drive up a dirt road, I had seen only one bison so far, but the ride offered some splendid scenery nonetheless. Here's what it looked like from the top of the mountain; I'm not sure of the elevation, but it was high enough up to offer a nice aerial-style view of the patchwork-quilted countryside below.
Finally, towards the end of the drive, I encountered this herd of bison. Several of them crossed the road in front of me , some leaping off an embankment to the left. (I can only imagine what would have happened if one of them had decided to leap onto my subcompact-sized car -- ouch.)
There were probably about 25 to 30 of them altogether, and as they made their way down the hill towards a creek, I imagined that this was a scene the Indians and early settlers must have been familiar with.
