Heading north on 285 to 503. This is definitely one of America's more interesting drives -- an earpopping, scenic rollercoaster seemingly straight out of an SUV commercial. The road first winds its way around hilly, rocky, barren scrubland. Then it winds a bit further, climbing into the foothills and mountains. The road suddenly changes from a two lane state highway into a single-lane pass as it winds through a tiny town hidden along the side of the mountain.

For the most part, the towns seemed economically impoverished, consisting mostly of small, ramshackle houses, cabins or trailers, although one could find art galleries even in these out-of-the-way places. ...Then I saw this house, which was decorated with numerous white objects which I first thought was going to be another gallery/souvenir shop, but turned out to be animal skulls. Signs warned people to "keep out" and "beware of dog".

Further along, the road took some sharp hairpin turns along the sheer side of a mountain. ... No guard rails; portions of the rocks blocking the view of the other lane. Do not attempt this drive at night!

After a long climb, my car finally made it to the top of this hill. Alas, although you get to see this pretty picture, there's no way I can upload the scent of fresh air, sage and pine onto the Web.

Here's the view on the other side of the road. Gathering clouds suggested a threat of rain.

Some of the towns and buildings in the region are apparently quite old.
